Research Themes

Our purpose is to build on, and harness experimental medicine expertise in dementia, liver disease, musculoskeletal disease, neuromuscular disease, and skin and oral disease, to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of ageing syndromes such as sarcopenia, frailty and multimorbidity.

The research themes drive our vision of improving lives through world-class research in ageing and long-term conditions. We build on and harness experimental medicine expertise in each theme to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of ageing syndromes such as sarcopenia, frailty and multimorbidity.

There are five research themes in the BRC: dementia, liver disease, musculoskeletal disease, neuromuscular disease, and skin and oral disease. In addition, we have a cross cutting theme on ageing syndromes to facilitate research at the interface between ageing and long-term conditions, and a cross-cutting theme for training and capacity building (the NIHR Newcastle Training School). We promote synergy and connectivity between our themes allowing us to leverage maximum benefit for advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Ageing Syndromes

We build on and harness experimental medicine expertise in each theme to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of ageing syndromes such as sarcopenia, frailty and multimorbidity.
