Making a difference in Ageing and Health
Professor Avan Sayer, Dame Jackie Daniel and Professor David Burn highlight how the partnership between Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University is tackling the global challenges of an Ageing population.
The world’s population is ageing rapidly. Longer life expectancies bring both benefits and challenges. Although some of us lead long, healthy and fulfilling lives, others develop single and often multiple long-term conditions which become more common and burdensome with age, leading to significant personal and societal cost such as increased need for health and social care. NIHR Newcastle BRC’s world- leading researchers are working with partners locally, nationally and around the globe to tackle these issues head on and make a difference.
Newcastle BRC is the only one in the country to focus on the conversion of lab-based research in ageing and multiple long-term conditions, into practical and meaningful benefits for patients, the public and the health and care system. Newcastle Hospitals world class clinical services are central to allowing us to see patients and the problems they are experiencing. This is vital to us being able to identify the questions we need to answer and enables us to use these findings to further improve clinical practice.
Professor Avan Sayer comments:
“Our mission is to understand why these conditions occur and also learn about how to identify them, treat them and indeed prevent them”
