The NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre funds four scholarships

Healthcare professionals interested in clinical research and the health of older people

The NIHR Newcastle BRC has created an opportunity for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals to be introduced to Clinical Research with Older People through an on-line Masters Module. We are excited that this opportunity allows for healthcare professionals with an interest in the health of older people and in clinical research to consider further academic opportunities.

The module aims to:

• Provide insight into the challenges and benefits of involving older people in clinical research, including hard to reach groups such as people with dementia and black and minority ethnic elders   • Increase awareness of appropriate strategies to improve recruitment of older people to clinical research studies in range of settings including hospital, care homes and clinical trial units  •Facilitate consideration of potential topics for future clinical research involving older people

We are pleased to introduce our 4 successful healthcare professionals:

Ailsa; Admiral Nurse, Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline at Dementia UK

“I have been a Nurse for many years and have remained very interested to develop my skills in research, but have found it difficult to access opportunities to further this interest. This scholarship opportunity will help me to focus on becoming more actively involved in research, specifically research that might assist individuals living with dementia and their families”

Bryony Storey; Research Nurse, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust

“This scholarship will allow me to further develop my knowledge of the theory that underlies research, so building on and improving the manner in which I undertake research delivery and enable me to move toward developing and undertaking my own research”

David Gray; Specialist Dietician, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

“I feel this scholarship opportunity will help confirm my intention to fully pursue an academic career in clinical research and broaden my influence as a clinical specialist”

Ruth Penfold; Physiotherapist, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

“This scholarship will help me develop the skills to be able to critique research more effectively and implement it accordingly. I hope to be able to go on to complete full masters with research project”
