Gary is Emerging Leader for the Informatics and Precision Care for an Ageing Population theme.
He is a Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology and recent recipient of a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship.
His primary interests are the pathogenesis of vasculitis, in particular Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). After a Wellcome Trust clinical PhD fellowship, he joined the Haniffa group in 2015 and in this collaborated to produce characterisation of mononuclear phagocytes in healthy donor peripheral blood by single cell RNA sequencing (Villani et al, 2017).
His research focuses on the role of mononuclear phagocytes in vasculitides, included the contribution of multinucleated giant cells that are common to this group of diseases. In my clinical role, he is an Honorary Consultant based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and recently contributed to the British Society of Rheumatology guidelines on the management of GCA.
