About us
Newcastle has a regional population struggling with health and ageing inequality and where the chance of dying under the age of 75 is 20% higher than in the South of England.
The region has developed some unique strengths to enable it to tackle these challenges, making it the ideal location for the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), with its focus on the delivery of advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions associated with ageing and poor health that is improving lives here in the North East, as well as across the UK and beyond.
The NIHR Newcastle BRC is central to the partnership between the Newcastle Hospitals and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University, a collaboration that has continued to develop and strengthen since our original application was submitted in 2007. New leadership across the Trust and University has further enhanced the position of the BRC within the partnership and reinforced a major common commitment to translational ageing research.
The NIHR is the nation's largest funder of health and care research and provides the people, facilities and technology that enable research to thrive.
The NIHR Newcastle BRC is focused on improving lives - in the region, the UK and beyond - through world-class research into ageing and long-term conditions.
Our BRC benefits from the skills, resources and infrastructure of this ‘Outstanding’-rated Trust, which has provided care to a regional and national community for over 250 years.
We are part of a world-leading collaboration of research scientists, engineers and clinicians at one of 24 UK Russell Group institutions known for world-class research.
Our BRC is located on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality; a purpose built, multi-use site dedicated to improving healthcare for older people.
We are England's most Northerly NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and play an important role in the health ecosystem of Newcastle and the wider region.
