Working with industry

We bring the NHS and academic together with industry partners to build sustainable collaborations that translate discoveries into patient benefit and economic growth.

We offer access to:

  • world-leading clinicians and scientists
  • well-characterised patient cohorts
  • world-class research infrastructure

We have an outstanding track record of delivering in partnership with industry.

Newcastle Hospitals has ranked top for open NIHR portfolio research studies for eight of the last ten years. In 2019, they opened the first NHS clinical trials facility specialising in late-phase commercial trials (now an NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre). In 2021, Newcastle Hospitals registered its 10,000th research study.

We lead three large international consortia funded by the European Innovative Medicines Initiative across our themes (dementia, liver disease and musculoskeletal). These consortia bring together the pharma industry with academic partners, to carry out innovative multidisciplinary work. Half of the £120m funding is provided by life sciences/tech companies. Our track record is evidenced by Newcastle’s top 10 ranking in an MRC Translational Research report for translational award funding (2008-2018) with particular strengths in the MRC Stratified Medicine Consortia.

We recently joined forces with the Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) and BRCs in Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield, to showcase our ground-breaking research with industry partners through a publication: NIHR Northern BRC Collaborative: Innovating with Industry.
